WASHINGTON — Monday is the federal holiday of Columbus Day , which is celebrated in some places as Indigenous Peoples Day.

Because of the federal holiday designation, government offices (even those not currently affected by the ongoing government shutdown) will be closed.

And while post offices and most banks will mostly be closed for business, retail and grocery stores tend to be open.
