LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A family says they feel like the justice system has failed them after their son’s killer negotiated a plea for a lesser charge.

Deonte Carter was originally charged with murder in the 2021 shooting death of Devon Sandusky. He entered an Alford plea Friday to change his charge to complicity to second-degree manslaughter.

“What did you really do for my son? You basically just exchanged one charge for another. Why would you drop it?” said Christina Sandusky Johnson, Devon’s mother.

Mother recalls tragic day

Christina Sandusky Johnson was out shopping one day in 2021 when she got a call that something terrible had happened.

“By the time I got there, the police were already there. They had it roped off and they wouldn’t let me through,” she said.
