VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas — Sixteen small dogs were rescued last week from inhumane conditions, including dirty water contaminated with feces and live maggots beneath their kennels, on a rural property in East Texas.
The SPCA of Texas said their staff responded to a welfare check request for an unoccupied property in rural Van Zandt County. When crews arrived, they heard dogs barking and saw vultures circling on Oct. 6.
Further inspection led SPCA officials to find filthy kennels, uneven flooring beneath the kennels, dirty water contaminated by feces and maggots under the area beneath the kennels. Many of the dogs, which were primarily Yorkies, Dachshunds and Chihuahuas, had matted fur, apparent hair loss, and extremely long toenails, the SPCA said.
