VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas (KETK) -- The SPCA of Texas rescued 16 neglected dogs from a Van Zandt County property last week after finding live maggots swarming near their kennels and water contaminated with feces.

The SPCA of Texas Animal Cruelty Investigations (ACI) Unit responded to the location on Oct. 6, after receiving an anonymous request for a welfare check on an unoccupied rural property. When the ACI arrived, they heard dogs barking and saw vultures circling the area. Upon investigation, they realized the dogs were neglected, living in inhumane conditions and the team worked to obtain a seizure warrant for the animals.

The seizure warrant was obtained the following day, and the team returned to continue inspecting the property.
