On Oct. 9, the U.S. State Department updated its travel advisory for Sri Lanka, warning travelers to “exercise increased caution” due to unrest, terrorism, and landmines.

There are three main reasons Americans should exercise increased caution, according to the department:

Protests and demonstrations over political and economic issues can occur without warning and may turn violent, with authorities deploying tear gas and water cannons to crowds.

Terrorist attacks have targeted tourist areas, markets, airports, and other public areas with little or no warning.

Unexploded land mines from the civil war remain in northern and eastern districts, marked with warning signs.

Travelers should avoid off-road areas due to risks of unexploded ordnance, remain aware of their surroundings in touris
