A 70-year-old woman was struck and killed by an SUV while trying to cross a highway Saturday in Monmouth County, authorities said.

Sherril Sakas, of Totowa, was crossing from south to north on Route 9 at County Road 520 (Robertsville Road) in Marlboro Township when she was hit about 7:30 a.m., according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago.

Sakas died at the scene. The SUV driver, who stopped and waited for police, has not been charged.
