A new drop in centre or “mutual aid site” on Algonquin Ave. hosted a community barbeque on Thursday, Oct. 9 to mark World Homeless Day.

Established in 2010, World Homeless Day is observed internationally on Oct. 10. It aims to recognize successes and advocate for better policies and funding to prevent and end homelessness.

The idea grew from international online discussions between people working to respond to homelessness.

Volunteers and clients of DIY Community Health, a mutual aid site, gathered in the parking lot on Algonquin Avenue in Timmins at lunchtime for free hamburgers and hot dogs, while Jason Sereda, a social worker and the organization’s president, called for sustainable funding for social services in Timmins.
