1LONG BRANCH, NJ – Heavy rain and rising tides caused widespread flooding across New Jersey on Monday evening, shutting down several major routes and disrupting rush-hour travel.
Transportation officials reported multiple highway closures as drivers faced treacherous conditions from the Jersey Shore to inland Morris County.
As of 7:03 p.m., all lanes of Route 36 were closed in both directions at Long Branch Avenue in Long Branch due to flooding.
Earlier in the evening, Route 40 in Egg Harbor Township was shut down in both directions just west of the Atlantic City Expressway as water covered the roadway.
In addition to flooding, strong winds and saturated soil caused a tree to fall across both lanes of U.S. 202 south of Tempe Wick Road in Harding Township, forcing another full closure.
