ALEXANDRIA — The process of improving safety at Voyager Elementary School’s main crosswalk and the intersection of Steger Road and Voyager Drive took a step ahead Monday night, Oct. 13.

On a unanimous vote, the Alexandria City Council accepted Widseth engineering services for the final design work in the amount of $38,900.

City and school officials said the combination of speeding and numerous turning movements creates a safety issue near the school.

Last spring, the city was awarded $369,800 in Safe Routes to School infrastructure funds for the project, estimated at $724,900. The proposed improvements consist of the removal of the excess driveways, the reorientation "squaring up" of the street intersection and narrowing Voyager Drive providing a shorter pedestrian crossing lengt
