HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man accused of releasing pepper spray while attempting to rob a First Hawaiian Bank in Waikiki pleaded not guilty Monday.
Charles Christian, 66, was indicted on a second-degree robbery charge for an incident that shut down Lewers Street for several hours on Sept. 29.
According to court documents, he handed a teller a demand note, then sprayed the chemical in the lobby before walking out.
Authorities said he turned himself in at the FBI building in Kapolei the next day after seeing on the news that 18 people had been sickened.
A judge confirmed his bail at $100,000.
His trial is set to begin in December.
