HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Maui Humane Society is pleading for adoptions as kennel overcrowding worsens.
Staff say when the population rises, stress levels do too, making it harder for animals to stay healthy.
CEO Nikki Russell says 18 dogs are still waiting for outcomes and will be euthanized if they can’t be adopted or placed by Oct. 30.
“These 18 dogs that we’re talking about, these are dogs that aren’t doing well here,” Russell said. “They’re struggling in our kennels every day.”
Russell says the shelter currently has 476 animals in its care, 225 on campus between the hospital, clinic and kennels, and another 251 in foster homes.
“We have 145 dogs in care. We have 43 kennels,” Russell said. “Those dogs that are in foster, they can come back at any minute. That happens daily.
