LUBBOCK, Texas -- As the government shutdown continues, many military families are feeling anxious about whether their next paycheck will come through.

Normally, during a shutdown, active-duty service members are required to keep working, but their pay can be delayed until Congress approves new funding. President Donald Trump announced last week that he directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to use Department of Defense funds to cover military paychecks on Oct. 15, a move that some legal experts say could face challenges.

Sarah Weede, the commander of Lubbock’s VFW Post 2466, said she’s been through shutdowns before and remembers the fear and confusion they caused among service members.
