LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — For 75 years, Memorial Coliseum has stood on the University of Kentucky campus as a powerful tribute to the Kentuckians who gave their lives in service to our country.
Built in 1950 as a memorial to veterans lost in World War I and World War II, it was later expanded to honor those killed in Korea, Vietnam, and other conflicts.
When the Coliseum first opened, the names of Kentucky’s World War II dead were carefully written by hand. John Horine, a UK engineering professor and gifted calligrapher, spent months inscribing nearly 10,000 names of fallen service members — including his own son.
