Bipin Joshi, a 23-year-old Nepali student, has been confirmed dead after being taken hostage by Hamas during their attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. His remains were handed over to Israeli authorities by Hamas, marking a tragic end to the family's hopes for his return. Joshi had arrived in Israel just a month prior to the attack to participate in an agricultural training programme at Kibbutz Alumim, located near the Gaza border.

During the assault, Joshi displayed remarkable bravery. When Hamas militants threw grenades into the shelter where he and other students were hiding, he managed to throw one grenade back, potentially saving lives. Unfortunately, he was injured in the process and subsequently captured by the attackers. Ten of the 17 Nepali students in the programme were killed during the attack.

Nepal's Ambassador to Israel, Dhan Prasad Pandit, confirmed that Joshi's body is currently being transported to Tel Aviv. He stated, "We have received information about the body of Bipin handed over to Israeli authorities by Hamas, and it is being taken to Tel Aviv and will arrive here in a few hours." A DNA test will be conducted to confirm Joshi's identity before his remains are repatriated to Nepal.

Joshi's family, particularly his younger sister Pushpa, has been actively seeking his release. Pushpa traveled long distances to meet with officials and participated in demonstrations in Israel. In August, the family met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog to advocate for Joshi's freedom. Despite a recent video showing him alive, he was not included in the latest list of hostages released by Hamas.

The situation surrounding Joshi's death comes amid a broader truce between Hamas and Israel, where Hamas released 20 living hostages, and Israel freed over 1,900 Palestinian prisoners. Joshi's story has resonated deeply, highlighting his courage and the tragic circumstances of his captivity. His family is now preparing for the final rites, which will be conducted by the Israeli government before his body is sent back to Nepal.
