Opposition leader Sussan Ley has called for an urgent investigation into Senator Lidia Thorpe’s remarks at a pro-Palestine rally in Melbourne, saying her words could make those working in Parliament House feel unsafe.

The Australian Federal Police confirmed they are examining the comments after the independent senator said she would “burn down Parliament House to make a point” while speaking at the protest on Sunday.

Senator Thorpe later said her statement was “clearly” a figure of speech, intended to express frustration at government inaction over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
