San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt, a UNC Asheville alumnus, announced his retirement on Oct. 13.
In the 2025 season, he guided the Padres to a 90-72 record and to the MLB playoffs before being eliminated by the Chicago Cubs 2-1 in the NL Wild Card Series.
"Just took a lot out of me," Shildt told USA Today Sports about his retirement. "Just looked in the mirror and knew I didn't have it in my to do what it takes to lead another 90-plus win season and World Series run. I'm at peace and look forward to the next chapter."
