Carmel city councilors are pushing back against plans from the city to move some public meetings to daytime hours at City Hall, Mayor Sue Finkam's latest proposal to cut down on costs amid budget constraints caused by the state's property tax reforms.

Holly Vonderheit, a spokesperson for the City of Carmel, told IndyStar the city is still evaluating options but that closing City Hall earlier on some days of the week could result in about $200,000 in savings in 2026, due to efficiencies and less overtime costs.

The idea, which the city is still exploring, comes as Carmel officials are in the midst of a difficult budget season. Due to the statewide property tax cuts, Carmel has $10 million less to work with than originally projected in its 2026 budget, city officials have said.
