SANDY — A man was shot and killed in Sandy Monday night, after a robbery near a city park.

About 8:20 p.m., an attempted robbery occurred near Main Street Park in the area of 8720 S. 90 East; that escalated to a shooting, said Sandy Police Sgt. Michael Olsen.

A man, described only as around 40 years old, was taken to a hospital in Murray to be treated for his injuries, where he later died, according to Olsen.

"There were witnesses to the shooting, and they are cooperating and being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation," he said.

Police said no one was in custody — but they don't believe there is any danger to the public as the man was likely shot by someone he knew.

An investigation is underway.
