Police in West Bengal's Durgapur on Tuesday ruled out that a second-year medical student was allegedly gang-raped in a forest near a private hospital, saying that only one person was involved.

Sunil Kumar Chowdhury, police commissioner of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, said only one person was involved in the sexual assault based on the statement given by the survivor and physical evidence.

"According to the statement given by the woman and based on the physical evidence, it has been established so far that, only one person was involved in the sexual assault. An investigation is under progress. Clothes of one accused have been collected and sent to a forensic laboratory," Chowdhury said in a press conference.
