NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — A Newport man was arraigned Tuesday morning, accused of assaulting a person who was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Preston Schuster, 21, was arrested and held at the ACI over the weekend on two counts each of felony domestic assault and domestic disorderly conduct, plus one count of possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.

Police said they were called to Carey Street Friday morning and found the 21-year-old victim needing immediate medical attention.

At last check, the victim was still at the hospital in critical condition.

The judge ordered Schuster to remain held on $100,000 bail. He was also ordered not to have any contact with the victim and to undergo a mental health screening.
