Canadian lumber exports to the U.S. are now subject to a 10 per cent tariff that came into effect on Tuesday, in addition to the 35 per cent duty that was already in place.
The additional tariffs, ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump, are bound to further disrupt the Canadian and B.C. lumber industry.
“We can’t underestimate the impact of a combined 45 per cent duty and tariff on our business,” Nick Arkle, CEO of West Kelowna’s Gorman Bros. Lumber, said Tuesday.
“It is critical that the federal government puts lumber on the negotiating table, equal to, and alongside steel, aluminum, and energy,” Arkle said. “Negotiations need to be occurring, now.”
