THE NEWS: The Maple Leafs certainly took a twisted route getting a backup goalie into a regular-season game.

Cayden Primeau will start against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday, a home back-to-back that affords Anthony Stolarz (1-2, an .886 save percentage) a rest.

The job was to be Joseph Woll’s before he took an indefinite leave for personal reasons and, failing that, maybe Marlies Dennis Hildeby or James Reimer — who was signed on a PTO midway through training camp when Woll departed, before his release.
