Hamilton’s postal workers were back on the street Tuesday as the national union representing Canada Post employees transitions from a cross-country strike to rotating shortages.
Their return comes almost three weeks after 55,000 Canada Post employees walked off the job on Sept. 25, when Ottawa greenlit reforms to the postal service that would close some post offices and end door-to-door deliveries for millions.
Tracey Langille, president of Canadian Union of Postal Workers Local 548, which represents about 1,600 workers in the Hamilton area, said strike activity will now be decided on a day-to-day basis by the national office.
“The decision to pivot to rotating (strikes) is to have less impact on the public but still work towards a contact,” Langille said.
