For what is likely the first time in Amazon ‘s history, founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos ‘ stake is now less than 10 percent of the company.

In a securities filing Tuesday, Bezos disclosed that he now owns 9 percent of the company’s shares, after selling off more than 100 million shares over the course of the last year. A year ago Bezos owned 10.1 percent of Amazon.

When the company went public in 1997, the tech mogul owned more than 43 percent of the company. When he stepped aside as CEO in 2021 and handed day-to-day control over to Andy Jassy, he owned 14.1 percent of the company, per SEC filings.
