HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office reports an in-custody death at the Haywood County Detention Center is under investigation.

Deputies said 40-year-old Carl G. Freiburg was booked into the detention center on Oct. 4 on charges including breaking and entering, larceny, and possession of stolen goods. He was being held on a $50,000 bond.

The North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine his cause of death. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was also asked to conduct an independent investigation into the incident, according to officials.

Sheriff Bill Wilke said that no further information on the incident will be released at this time at the request of Freiburg’s family.
