NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A new data analysis from Tennessee Under the Gun is reporting that gunshot wounds are the number-one cause of death for children in the state.

State Sen. Heidi Campbell presented the group’s findings Tuesday morning, along with Beth Joslin Roth, who works in her office.

The group said that the Volunteer State “hit a record high for firearm deaths” in 2023, and that homicides as the result of a shooting have doubled in the last decade.

“Let that sink in,“ Campbell said. ”That’s the number one cause of death for our kids."
