HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. —
An investigation is underway after an in-custody death at the Haywood County Detention Center.
On Tuesday, the Haywood County Sheriff's Office reported that 40-year-old Carl G. Freiburg died while in custody.
Freiburg was booked into the detention center on Oct. 4 under a $50,000 bond. Authorities said Freiburg was facing charges including breaking and entering, larceny, and possession of stolen goods.
The cause of death is under investigation by the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Haywood County Sheriff Bill Wilke requested that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) conduct an independent investigation into the incident. The Haywood County District Attorney’s Office has also been notified.
