ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

Reading skills in Albuquerque Public Schools have shown marked improvement on standardized testing in the last three years, but the math scores are another story.

APS Superintendent Gabrielle Blakey said grades 3-8 tested at 44% proficiency. However, high school math scores on SAT tests went down 16% and now are just 12%.

"Since 2022, all our reading scores have gone up about 8%, which is a very significant increase," Blakey said. "You know, is you see something that's half a percent to one percent, that's showing normal growth of something that could be expected if you're not intentional."

When it comes to math scores, Blakey said there is a correlation between poor scores and chronic absenteeism, which is an issue they are working to improve.
