This week, certain pensioners can apply for a payment of up to £300. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced that those over the State Pension age who need to claim this year's Winter Fuel Payment can do so via phone, as lines opened on Monday (October 13).

According to the Daily Record , pensioners can also submit their claims by post. Comprehensive instructions on how to do this are available on GOV.UK .

Throughout November and December, Winter Fuel Payments will be automatically sent out to roughly nine million people in England and Wales. At least 880,000 Scottish pensioners will receive up to £305 through a similar but separate payment from next month - known as the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment.
