A man accused of wielding a fake gun while committing multiple carjackings poses a serious danger to the community and should not be granted bail, a court has been told.

Simon Michael Davies, 48, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday via video link to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Davies broke down in tears multiple times on a hospital bed during the hearing, as his alleged offending was read to the court.

He has been charged with possessing an imitation firearm, which he allegedly used in multiple carjackings, an attempted aggravated burglary, assault and threats to kill.

He is accused of assaulting a man at a BP convenience store, and trying to steal a Honda Civic before carjacking a Mitsubishi SUV, while presenting a small black firearm.
