GARY — Julian Mitchel, a student at 21st Century Charter School, is particularly interested in flying planes and building things.
He plans to become an aerospace engineer in the future, combining those interests, along with another dream.
"I want to make a corporation," he said. "Where we test and design or build our own aircraft."
Mitchel was one of over 400 middle and high school students from eight Gary schools in attendance for Gary/Chicago International Airport's Aviation Day and Youth Expo on Tuesday.
Students learned about various careers in aviation, tried out flight simulators, built stomp rockets and paper airplanes, and participated in other hands-on activities focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
