HUBBARD COUNTY, Minn. — Only one law enforcement officer has been killed in the line of duty in the history of Hubbard County, Minnesota.
Park Rapids Police Chief Frank Town was ambushed, shot and killed on July 10, 1943.
According to the Park Rapids Enterprise, “The shot was fired by Carl Trowbridge, hiding in the hay mow of his barn on the east side, ending a long-standing grudge Trowbridge held against the popular police officer. Trowbridge, after fleeing from the scene of the crime, was later captured and is now being held in the county jail.”
Based on witness statements given to the county attorney and county sheriff at the time, the Enterprise reported that the trouble started with a family quarrel during supper. Trowbridge struck his wife and older daughter. When his son interfer
