DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — More than 1,000 gallons of wastewater spilled into a Durham creek late Tuesday morning after non-flushable materials caused the sewer line to overflow, city officials said.
According to City of Durham officials, the Department of Management were notified of a manhole overflowing just before 11 a.m. on 1100 Goldendale Drive. Crews dammed the spill, set up a bypass pump, and pumped the untreated wastewater back into the sewer system until the spill was stopped just before 1:40 p.m.
No damage to people, property, or the environment was reported, according to city officials, but about 1,600 gallons of untreated wastewater flowed into a tributary of Little Lick Creek.
Officials said the spill was caused by non-flushable materials in the sewer.
