MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The University of Louisiana Monroe’s Toxicology faculty have been awarded a grant of $134,299 to conduct water quality monitoring in the Upper Bayou Lafourche watershed.

The project seeks to determine current water quality conditions in the Bayou Lafourche watershed and indicate potential changes in water quality due to Best Management Practices (BMPs) implemented by area farmers and landowners.

Officials say ULM Toxicology will sample monthly for three years after BMP implementation has concluded.

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry and the U.S. Department of Agriculture will use the data to determine if water quality has improved since BMP implementation, and to identify critical areas for future BMP implementation.
