CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Duke Energy employees teamed up with the American Red Cross and Secord Harvest Food Bank to potentially set a new world record.

The mission on Wednesday was to get the most people to pack emergency readiness kits for families across North and South Carolina. Guinness World Records representatives were on site to see if they could set a new record.

Hundreds of volunteers packed the Charlotte Convention Center to assemble kits with blankets, rain ponchos, flashlights, nonperishable items, and first aid supplies.

As the Carolinas are in the midst of hurricane season, and since Hurricane Helene's impact is still heavily felt in the area, this event shows the importance of being prepared.

In the end, volunteers made 269 kits to set the record.
