SEATTLE — After hours of intense debate, the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board voted nearly unanimously to reject a plan that would have removed all climbable surfaces from the iconic structure.

Board members said the ladders and walkways hold historical value and that they want to explore additional lighting and security cameras as a first step.

Community members are looking to make changes at Gas Works Park to deter climbing after the recent falling death of a Ballard High School student last July. The proposal was discussed at a Landmarks Preservation Board meeting Wednesday evening.
