SEATTLE — Sound Transit is studying whether to add fare gates to some Link light rail stations — part of a broader effort to improve safety, boost fare compliance and close a projected $20 to 30 billion shortfall over the coming decades.

Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine directed staff to prepare a pilot program for fare gates at “various key stations.” An announcement with details on where and when the pilot will happen is expected later this year.

"“I’ve directed staff to research and be able to present to the board a proposal for launching a pilot to install fare gates at various key stations and assess adding fare gates as part of all future designs,” Constantine said during a September Sound Transit board meeting.
