PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A Port Arthur man who initially claimed a woman was accidentally shot during a struggle later changed his story after the victim recovered enough to speak with investigators, according to Port Arthur police.

Kvon Deshawn Sonnier, 26, of Port Arthur, was indicted Wednesday on one count of aggravated assault–family violence in connection with the shooting last month in the 7600 block of 9th Avenue.

Investigators said the woman was shot in her side and left hand and taken to a hospital in critical condition. Her injuries were so severe that she lost a kidney, one of her legs was left paralyzed, and she was unable to speak with police until she was taken off a ventilator.
