The Celtics made a roster move ahead of their preseason finale, waiving rookie RJ Luis Jr. hours before their exhibition matchup with the Toronto Raptors at TD Garden.
Boston acquired Luis, an undrafted forward out of UMass and St. John’s, in the August trade that sent Georges Niang to the Utah Jazz. The 22-year-old filled one of the Celtics’ three two-way contract slots, but he saw less playing time in the first three preseason games than the Celtics’ unsigned camp invites.
Luis logged eight total minutes against Memphis, Toronto and Cleveland — the fewest of all healthy Celtics players during that span — tallying three points on 3-of-4 shooting and three turnovers. His release opened a two-way spot for Boston, which the team could use to sign one of its training camp tryout players.
