The redevelopment of Worcester’s Lakeside Apartments began on Wednesday with a celebratory groundbreaking featuring state and local officials.
Overseen by the Worcester Housing Authority, the redevelopment seeks to demolish the 202 units of public housing at Lakeside Ave and build a new complex with 360 units. The current apartments, 34 in total, have stood since 1949, according to Worcester Housing Authority CEO Alex Corrales.
Standing in front of a crowd underneath a large white tent, Corrales said the current apartments are not up to date for the 21st century.
“This property was built with only two wheelchair units. The new Lakeside will include 35,” Corrales said to applause. “And the reason it includes 35 is because accessibility and dignity are not luxuries; they are requirements.
