BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) - October is Contact Lens Safety Month, spreading awareness for the potential risks if they're not handled correctly.

When Dr. Thomas Jarome has a new patient getting contact lenses at Boardman Family Eye Care, he always starts by advising the same thing.

"We have them wash their hands, of course, that's always kind of a forgotten thing with contacts. So, you wash your hands, and we are going to teach them the ins and outs, how to clean them, and the most important thing with contacts is cleaning them appropriately," Jarome said.

When you clean your contacts, you should dump out all the leftover solution from the case and start fresh. Jarome says just topping it off can cause infections.
