LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The discovery of the New World Screwworm in Mexico has raised concerns about cattle entering the U.S.

Laredo and Webb County officials met to discuss precautions against screwworms, which can lay parasitic eggs in the wounds of warm-blooded animals, including humans.

During a Commissioners Court meeting on Tuesday, October 14, Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina stated, “It’s a very big situation. If y’all don’t know what’s happening, it even affects your pets. It can get into any cut in your pet, and that little worm will kill your pet if it gets in there.”

After discovering a case of the New World Screwworm just 70 miles from Laredo, officials from both the city and county sprang into action.
