LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Rep. Henry Cuellar joined fellow House Democrats on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to demand an end to what he called a “Republican-led shutdown” that is affecting families across the nation.

The South Texas congressman said Democrats will continue working to keep health care costs low, reopen the government and ensure federal employees receive their paychecks.

“Instead of negotiating, Republicans refuse to hold votes, leaving millions without certainty or support,” Cuellar said in a statement posted to social media.

Cuellar warned that more than 55,000 of his constituents are at risk of losing Medicaid coverage. He added that an additional 113,000 people could lose affordable coverage if Republicans continue blocking the extension of health care tax credits.
