HAMPDEN, Maine (WABI) - Wednesday marked Maine’s inaugural Apple Crunch Day. Kids and adults across the state were invited to take a big bite out of a local, crunchy apple to celebrate.

All schools in RSU 22 took part. Second graders at the George Weatherbee School in Hampden gathered in the lunchroom to get their taste.

Instructors say they’ve been working on teaching all things apple -- from their health benefits to impacts on the local economy.

“We have been working throughout the month to showcase apple orchards across the state, apple tidbits, occasional dad apple joke,” said Brittany Russell, director of health, wellness, and safety.

The noontime bite was a way to bring together everything they’ve learned in a fun way.
