PHOENIX — The Phoenix City Council voted Wednesday to approve paying $1.2 million to settle litigation filed by the family of a man shot by police in 2019 as officers were searching for another man.
Henry Rivera was fatally shot after Phoenix police came to a local motel in search of Eddison Noyola, who was wanted by authorities for a shooting and kidnapping a woman.
During the manhunt for Noyola, police received a tip about his possible whereabouts and descended upon the hotel where Rivera was staying with his family.
According to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Rivera's family, Rivera started to panic after seeing the large police presence and locked himself inside the motel bathroom.
