MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Mary Nugent will turn 102 this month, and Senator Bill Cassidy took to the U.S. Senate floor to celebrate her journey.
Cassidy reflected on Nugent’s life of service and devotion to God, her country, and her community.
" Mary, thank you for your service to our country and state.“, Senator Cassidy said,” You’ve made Louisiana and our country a better place for 102 years."
Born on a farm near Libuse, Louisiana Mary Nugent spent her early days tending to fruit orchards, vegetable gardens, and caring for farm animals.
After enlisting, Nugent was building planes at a bomber plant and served as a parachute rigger. Her post-combat life was devoted to the tuberculosis unit at Pineville Veteran Hospital.
