Britney Spears has responded to allegations ex husband Kevin Federline made in his new memoir about their three-year marriage, including their divorce and custody battle over their two children.
The pop star accused Federline of telling "white lies" in the upcoming "You Thought You Knew" book, where the former backup dancer said their sons were afraid to stay at Spears' house because she'd stand in front of their doorways holding a knife while they slept.
"The constant gaslighting from (my) ex-husband is extremely hurtful and exhausting. I have always pleaded and screamed to have a life with my boys," Spears wrote on X. "Relationships with teenage boys is complex. I have felt demoralized by this situation and have always asked and almost begged for them to be a part of my life."
The "Gimme More" singer said on Oct. 15 that their sons Jayden, 19, and Preston, 20, have long witnessed a lack of respect Federline has shown her, adding that "they need to take responsibility for themselves."
"Trust me, those white lies in that book, they are going straight to the bank and I am the only one who genuinely gets hurt here. I will always love them and if you really know me, you won’t pay attention to the tabloids of my mental health and drinking," she wrote.
She added, "I am actually a pretty intelligent woman who has been trying to live a sacred and private life the past 5 years. I speak on this because I have had enough and any real woman would do the same."
USA TODAY has reached out to Federline's representatives for comment on Spears' post.
Kevin Federline wanted to tell his story in new memoir
Federline recently spoke to USA TODAY in an exclusive interview, where he explained that he wrote the memoir because "For two decades I feel like everybody else has told my story, and now it's time for me to tell it."
"I see my sons trying to navigate this situation that's been absolutely difficult, and they're so young to even have to try and navigate a situation like this that I felt the need to sound the alarm," he said. "I need people to support my sons. I need people to support Britney. I need people to wake up and really look at this for what it is."
In the memoir, Federline said that their sons decided to stop visiting Spears' house following several recorded incidents of her yelling, "berating" them, or "smashing things in the house."
He described the boys' relationship with their mother as an "ongoing fluid situation."
Britney Spears says she's only spent 45 minutes with one son
In the past five years, Spears has only spent 45 minutes with one son and had only four visits with the other, according to her X post. "I have pride too. From now on I will let them know when I am available," she wrote.
Spears and her youngest son, Jayden, reunited in November 2024.
Federline's book comes two years after Spears published her own memoir, "The Woman in Me," which chronicled the conservatorship that granted her father control of much of her life for years and prompted the #FreeBritney movement.
"You Thought You Knew" contained multiple claims about Spears, including that he found her cheating with a female dancer and that the "Free Britney movement got it wrong," leaving their sons stuck in the middle, feeling "powerless."
