BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Four of the many African American students who made history in Baton Rouge are retelling their story.
Freya Rivers was the first African American girl to walk into the desegregated Lee High, which is now Liberty High, and was the first African American woman to go to LSU.
"I'm still alive. And most of the children that you meet think that this happened way before, during Abraham Lincoln and all. So, to see somebody that's alive and that has gone through all of this makes a difference," said Rivers.
Rivers, like her peers, went through a lot during the process of desegregation. Some were sent to Baton Rouge High, others to Glen Oaks High. Rivers said at the time, things were different, but now, she says she worries for the future.
