Police have lathi charged protestors in Assam's Baksa district where the five accused in the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg are being transferred. Protestors are enraged over their transfer to the Baksa Jail at Mussalpur.
Locals suspect the choice of this relatively low-profile facility that hasn't had prior inmates is aimed at protecting the accused from widespread public scrutiny and potential backlash. Baksa is about 100 km from the state's capital Guwahati.
Those arrested so far include North East India Festival (NEIF) chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen's manager Siddhartha Sharma, his cousin and police officer Sandipan Garg and his personal security officers (PSOs) Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya.
