Sydney is on track to experience the hottest October on record thanks to a rare Antarctic weather event.

The NSW capital typically experiences an average maximum temperature of 22.2 degrees during October, however Sydney has experienced far higher temperatures over the first half of this month - with the average reaching as high as 27.2 degrees.

And Sydneysiders are set for more high temperatures, with Friday set to hit a scorching 32 degrees - before a slightly cooler weekend of 23 degrees on Saturday and 26 degrees on Sunday.

Temperatures will then ramp up again, hitting 33 degrees on Monday followed by 28 and 27 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday.
